What are the ingredients in honey?
Honey is 100% pure, no ingredients are added or taken away
at any time. Honey is made by the bees from the nectar that they gather from flowers, it
is then transfered and stored in honeycombs in the beehive.
What is the caloric value of honey?
One tablespoon of honey contains 60 calories.
Does honey contain fat or cholesterol?
No. Honey is composed primarily of carbohydrates.
Why shouldnt I feed honey to a child under 1 year
of age?
Infant Botulism is a rare but very serious disease
affecting the nervous system of infants. Honey and other raw agricultural products may
contain bacterial spores from Clostridium botulinum that could cause Infant Botulism.
These bacterial spores are widely distributed in nature. They can be found in soil, dust,
the air or raw agricultural products. C. botulinum spores have been detected in corn
syrup, honey, fresh and processed meats, fruits and vegetables. Scientists dont know
why, but this disease has never been reported in an infant older than 11 months of age.
Does honey change as it ages?
Honey darkens with age and becomes a bit stronger in taste
but it does not spoil. It will keep indefinitely if stored in a sealed container at room
temperature.
What is honey crystallization?
Crystallization is part of honey's natural process.
All honey will crystallize in time, but it never spoils. Store honey
in a tightly closed container in a dry place. Freezing or refrigerating
honey will cause it to granulate quicker, so it's not recommended.
Crystallized honey is not ruined. It simply needs to be liquefied.
To do so, place the (uncovered) container in a pan of boiled water
(off the stove) until the honey turns clear. Or put it in a (uncovered)
microwaveable container for 10 seconds at a time. Do not overheat;
honey can scorch.
