BUSY B's

Children work in teams of four. Each team is given a piece of chart paper, two light coloured markers, two pairs of scissors, two glue sticks, and one old newspaper. When the signal is given, two children begin scanning for words containing the letter "B". These words are highlighted with the markers. A third member of the team cuts out the highlighted words and passes the clippings to the fourth child who glues them on the chart paper. Give children ten minutes, letting them know when there is but one minute remaining. (Some teams may decide to stop scanning for words and concentrate on cutting and gluing during the last minute).

When the time is up, each group has ten seconds to rush the chart to a scorer's table. Clippings not glued to the chart are not counted. Before beginning the activity, establish how scores will be tallied. Words in larger print (eg: headlines) may be given extra points. The winning team is the team with the most points.
